Cartridge Care

There are 3 types of inkjet cartridges:

Cartridges with printhead attached (most HP, Lexmark and some Canon)

Separate printhead and cartridge—the printhead can be removed. (most Canon)

Printhead is attached to the printer and the cartridge can be removed. (most Epson)

How Cartridges Work

Tip
We suggest that you never completely empty a cartridge.
Inkjet cartridges work on the principle of rapidly heating ink in a series of extremely fine jets or nozzles that have their own series of heating elements.

Cartridges that are not used regularly can become blocked. Blocked jets can cause an element to "burn out". This can also occur when trying to print with an empty cartridge. The ink passing through the jets cools the elements avoiding "burn out".

Points to Remember

Epson Users

Epson cartridges need to be used regularly to stop the ink in the printhead drying out. Use at least once a week for both black and colour.

Cartridges can only be changed when the "ink out" light is showing otherwise the printer will stop working until it is reset.

  • As soon as your printer shows signs of a near empty cartridge, remove and refill using your "Refill Kit" or replace it with a new replacement cartridge.

Signs of a near empty cartridge include:
    • Low ink sign flashing
    • No print on the page
    • No print lines appearing through the text
  • Always refer to your Printer Manual for your specific signs
    Do not completely empty cartridges.

  • Do not cover colour cartridges with tape as this will cause colour contamination through capillary action.

  • Always store your cartridges in a cool place as heat may cause them to leak.

  • Always have a Refill Kit or Replacement Cartridge handy to avoid printing delays.

  • With colour cartridges one colour usually runs out before the others. Do not continue to print. Remove and refill with your "Refill Kit" or replace with a replacement cartridge.

  • Always run the appropriate cleaning cycle and print test when installing new, refilled or replacement cartridges. Sometimes you will need to do this several times to establish fresh ink at the printhead. Check with your printer manual to find how to do this.
